The Best Skincare Ingredients for Skin Hydration

A great way to prevent stretch marks is to ensure that skin maintains its maximum elasticity throughout pregnancy by keeping your skin well-hydrated. One of the best and easiest ways to do this is by using a skincare product made with of a balance of three types of ingredients: humectants, emollients, and occlusives.

HUMECTANTS

Natural Humectants: Glycerine; Sodium Lactate

Humectants are ingredients that attract and retain moisture from their environment i.e.: the air or the deeper layers of the skin such as the dermis. When applied to the skin, humectants improve the hydration of the stratum corneum (outermost layer of the skin) which is helpful to soften the skin's texture and keep it looking plump, firm and dewy. Humectants must however be used with caution, as continued evaporation from the skin can actually worsen dryness. Water absorbed from the dermis into the stratum corneum is easily lost to the environment, increasing Transepidermal Water Loss (evaporation of water from the upper layer of skin). It is for this reason that humectants are often combined with occlusive ingredients which are able to trap moisture in the skin.

OCCLUSIVES

Natural Occlusives: Cocoa Butter; Lanolin

Occlusive ingredients create a physical barrier that coat the surface of the skin. This prevents the evaporation of water from the skin's surface (Transepidermal Water Loss), thereby maintaining the water content of the skin.

When it comes to occlusive ingredients, less is more, so avoid products that contain a high percentage of occlusives like Petroleum (Vaseline), Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil) and Isopropyl Myristate. These ingredients block skin pores and prevent essential nutrients from being absorbed into the skin. They can also prevent wastes from being excreted from the skin's pores. Long term use of heavy occlusive ingredients can lead to permanently enlarged pores.

EMOLLIENTS

Natural Emollients:  Shea Butter; Wheatgerm Oil; Olive Oil; Almond Oil

Emollients are lipids and oils that smooth the skin’s surface by filling in rough cracks between cells in the outer skin layer. This has the effect of improving the skin softness, flexibility, smoothness and hydration.
